Rockford Fosgate P3 series Review

Since a lot of time, we embarked on making our “best car subwoofers section” worth reading respecting your valuable time.

When it comes to reviewing mid-priced car subwoofers there is just a little number who can come on the list.

And sure Rockford Fosgate P3 series with both D2 and D4 versions will come on our list. They are just awesome.

If you want an average subwoofer   “by average I mean that you don’t want a sub that is freaking loud, freaking expensive, freaking everything”

you don’t want to miss this review because we will review one of the best average subwoofers in the market in 2017, the RF P3 could be a great option for you.

Rockford Fosgate P3 series 2017 review

As you will see in the following screenshot from Rockford Fosgate,  they have 3 different lines of car subwoofers:

1- The standard which is the Punch series

2- Prime series for “high-performance car audio”

3- Power series for “high power handling and window-rattling bass”

puch vs prime vs power

About the P3 series:

RF P3 is the third generation of the Punch “standard” series that Rockford introduces. The series that “made Rockford Fosgate GREAT AGAIN”.

because of the output of this equation:

Great build quality + very decent sound + reasonable price = one of the best traditional subwoofers out there.

In the next section we, will respond to popular questions you will ask if you are interested in buying the RF p3.

How good is the p3 series?

Let’s assume that there are 3 people thinking about buying the P3 John, Joshua, and Jacob, okay?

John is a guy who needs deep bass with obvious tunes and beautiful lows (to John the RF P3 is pretty damn good)

with Joshua who is a guy who listens to pop, rock, and blues so, he needs clear and tight bass and Awesome sound control to listen to this type of music but he doesn’t want to pay that much to enjoy his own type of music  (for Joshua, it also will be very wise option to purchase)

Jacob, on the other hand, is a rocking DUDE who wants to build a quite powerful car sound system that will give him the power he needs to rock the road (Sadly for Jacob this is not going to be his ultimate option).

Rockford Fosgate as a traditional subwoofer is one of the best. So, it could be more than enough for most of the customers. But a big portion of the car audio enthusiasts will not be satisfied with just a standard sub and there you could start thinking about alternatives.

how much airspace does a Rockford Fosgate p3 need? Or what is the best Enclosure for the P3?

Dealing with the P3 as a standard subwoofer we should go with a sealed box because it would be so compatible with what it serves the best.

What is a good amp for the P3?

Okay look, here we have 2 versions the D2 which comes with 2 ohms and the D4 which comes with 4 ohms.

We wish we could give you details more than what Sonic Electronix provided but they nailed it so check there guide here

RF P3 series features:

CEA-2031 Compliant:

Power handling on the RF P3 series conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. Which means that it can handle power under continuous demand but not instantaneous power handling.

Flexfix fit basket:

A flex fit basket allows the subwoofer to utilize slots so it could fit in tighter places.

A beautiful trim ring:

An aluminum trim ring is included to improve the look of the subwoofer.

Stitched tinsel leads:

To reduce the mass of tinsel leads and strain over a greater area improving the reliability and performance of the subwoofer.

“VAST” surround:

The Vertical Attach Surround Technique significantly increases a speaker’s effective radiating cone area. The result provides up to 25% more effective radiating cone area for the same model speaker.

Anodized Aluminum Voice Coil Former:

Rockford Fosgate subwoofers use anodized aluminum voice coil formers that provide superior heat dissipation (up to 100° at full power levels). This keeps subwoofers cool during high SPL conditions.

Now we answered the popular questions about the P3 series we are going to highlight the Main features that make the P3 a desirable series.

The P3 series has 2 versions of it the D2 and the D4 and they are quite identical. The one difference you will find is that you can get the D2 with 2 or 4 Ohms and you can get the D4 with 4 or 8 Ohms. so we are going to review specifically the D2 series and you can apply it on the D4.

P3D2 10 Inch 2017 review:

The P3 10 Inch is the smallest size in the P3 series. It is a cool starting point if you want to deal with RF. if you are searching for a 10 Inch sub that is between $125 and $150 this baby should be on your list. Maybe on the top of it.

Above we described the characteristics of the P3 series and what makes it so good so within this part we will highlight the features of every sub individually so you can get a closer overview of each one of these subs.

The P3D2 10 Inch is the best 10 Inch sub under $200. if you want a sub that has Premium build quality, crystal clear sound, and deep not rattling bass you couldn’t go wrong with this one.

Just don’t think that you will break your windows with it.

We found that a lot of people are happily powering this baby with the RF Prime 500X1D so, it is kind of recommended if you will buy the sub to get the 500X1D with it.

The bottom line is RF p3D2 10 Inch is a very cool sub that you won’t regret buying it whatever what are your need as long as you don’t expect them to give you the ultimate competition subwoofer performance.

Now let’s check what the people who bought the sub on Amazon said about it:

P3 D2-12 Inch

Rockford Fosgate P3D2 12 Inch is a beautiful subwoofer you need to know before you buy your next subwoofer.

The real action and rattling bass start with this baby, considering that the 10 Inch one was Awesome and compete with bigger subwoofers also this one doing what his little brother does.

You can compare the RF P3D2 12 Inch with subwoofers that cost more than $300 and the surprising fact is that this baby could win.

Picking the right Enclosure and the right amp is essential to get the most out of the D2 12 Inch Subwoofer.

Some people overpower it and it goes the extra mile and give you more bass without breaking, but we actually don’t find a need to do such a thing.

The D2 12 Inch would perfectly go with the Rockford Fosgate Prime 1,200-Watt Class-D 1-Channel Amplifier. Put these powerful beasts with a sealed or ported enclosure (as you prefer) and you are ready to go to the moon riding your car and powering it with the output from this sub.

So, let’s wrap up why you might buy the RF P3 D2 12 Inch one and why it should be on your list?

Putting this in an equation to make it compelling:

Rockford Fosgate P3D2 12 Inch = a beast with a 12 Inch size + handle more power + could beat more expensive subwoofers + deep bass + crystal clear sound + Amazing price.

P3D2-15 Inch

Now with the boss, the P3D2 15 Inch BIG LOUD subwoofer. With this sub, you can EASILY get what you will get with average $350 – $450 Sub depending on the brand you’re buying it from.

Because it is the biggest model in the P3D2 series as you would expect it is a very loud and big subwoofer. You could rattle your whole car with 2 15 Inch P3D2 subs.

with a 1200 Watts RMS, you can go loud, VERY LOUD. The bottom line is that no matter how loud it gets it will give a clear crisp sound with rattling tight bass

When it comes to the size and the box we should pause and think for a minute. Now we have a 15 Inch sub so, sure it is big and it will depend on the output I need to get from it, for example, If you don’t to push this subwoofer for its maximum limits going with a sealed Enclosure is going to be a very wise choice.

But on the other hand, we don’t get a 15 Inch subwoofer to be POLITE with it, the reality is we will need to push it to its limits so you probably will go with ported or even a pandbass Enclosure.

You can get it between $195 and $230. You see, it is an amazing deal for anyone who values the build quality and all the things you get with buying such a beast.

People who bought the RF P3D2 15 Inch loved it everywhere. We went to Amazon, Crutchfield, and all over the web to see what the people are saying.

Sure some people did not like it and had issues with it and we are going to highlight them but the overall opinion we got from the web is impressive.

Like the previous subs we found cool reviews:
